BELLE OF THE BALL PROGRAM
The Belle of the Ball (BOTB) is an annual dress drive and scholarship program sponsored by the Junior League of Brooklyn to provide formal attire for teenage girls preparing for senior prom, graduation and other formal events. The program culminates with a Day of Beauty, a dress and accessories giveaway and ‘mini-makeover’, run in conjunction with the Brooklyn Prom and Scholarship Project for 2014. Our goal is to promote self-confidence and individual beauty and to transform each young woman into a princess on their prom night! We also encourage intelligence through our scholarship program and foster a sense of voluntarism in each of our attendees.
The JLB created BOTB in 2009 to help Brooklyn teens (from 6th through 12th grade) in need attend their Prom and other formal events. Members of the league saw a need in the community that was intensified by the financial crisis that began in 2007. To combat the direct need for formal wear, the JLB began a clothing drive as an annual Done in a Day project. In 2012, members expanded the program to include makeovers at the Day of Beauty with the goal of instilling confidence into the everyday lives of the young women in attendance. Our 5th Annual Belle of the Ball program in 2013 served over 165 young ladies and their families and provided 4 college book scholarships to graduating seniors.
