BELLE AND BEAU OF THE BALL

Formerly called the Belle of the Ball, this program is an annual dress drive and scholarship program sponsored by the Junior League of Brooklyn to provide formal attire for teenage girls preparing for senior prom, graduation and other formal events. The program culminates with a Day of Beauty - a dress and accessories giveaway with mini style makeovers and a presentation of scholarship awards. Our goal is to promote self-confidence and the individual image of beauty while relieving the attendees of the financial stresses of participating in hallmark, year-end events; closing access gaps; and promoting advancement by way of educational or professional independence. Last year, this event was run in conjunction with the Brooklyn Prom and Scholarship Project.

In 2015, we continue our effort to enrich the event, having exceeded our fundraising goal for the scholarship awards by raising over $11,000 for the young women and collaborating with the Kappa Beta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, to include young men in the clothing giveaway.

PROGRAM HISTORY

The JLB created BOTB in 2009 to help Brooklyn teens (from 6th through 12th grade) in need attend their Prom and other formal events. Members of the league saw a need in the community that was intensified by the financial crisis that began in 2007. To combat the direct need for formal wear, the JLB began a clothing drive as an annual Done in a Day project. In 2012, members expanded the program to include makeovers at the Day of Beauty with the goal of instilling confidence into the everyday lives of the young women in attendance. Our 6th Annual Belle of the Ball program in 2014 served over 150 young ladies and their families and provided 6 college scholarships to graduating seniors.
